Congratulations to Michele May!
At the Classic Center here in Athens, Michele May, part of our pastoral staff, was ordained a Deacon in Full connection. It is a tremendous achievement after years of education and preparation.

The Ministry of the Deacon
Those who respond to God's call to lead in service and to equip others for this ministry through teaching, proclamation, and worship and who assist elders in the administration of the sacraments are ordained deacon.

Ordained to Word and Service
Deacons are persons called by God, authorized by the church, and ordained by a bishop to a lifetime ministry of Word and Service to both the community and the congregation in a ministry that connects the two. Deacons exemplify Christian discipleship, create opportunities for others to enter into discipleship, and connect the needs and hurts of the people with the church:
• in the world, the deacon seeks to express a ministry of compassion and justice and assists lay persons as they claim their own ministry; and
• in the congregation, the ministry of the deacon is to teach and to form disciples, and to lead worship together with other ordained and lay persons, connecting the needs and hurts of the people with the church.

Deacons give leadership in the church's life:
• in the teaching and proclamation of the Word
• in worship and in assisting the elders in the administration of the sacraments of baptism and the Lord's Supper
• in forming and nurturing disciples
• in conducting marriages and burying the dead
• in the congregation's mission to the world and
• in leading the congregation in interpreting the needs, concerns, and hopes of the world

Called and Set Apart for a Ministry of Service
From the earliest days of the church, deacons were called and set apart for the ministry of love, justice, and service; of connecting the church with the most needy, neglected, and marginalized among the children of God. This ministry grows out of the Wesleyan passion for social holiness and ministry among the poor. The ministry of the deacon is a faithful response of the mission of the church meeting the emerging needs of the future. Deacons are accountable to the annual conference and the bishop for the fulfillment of their call to servant leadership.

On Father’s Day Dr. Sheila mentioned a book as a ‘must book’ for all fathers and single moms of sons.  The book is entitled “Things We Wish We Had Said”  Reflections of a Father and Son by Tony and Bart Campolo.

This book is a collection of personal letters written between Tony Campolo and his adult son, Bart.  At times it’s funny; at times it leaves the reader quietly sobered.  Above all, it’s always honest as it portrays the challenges of growing up and parenting.   Parents will be delighted with the observations and wisdom on raising children and teenagers will be greatly assisted by the discussions regarding further education and careers.  Expect your perspective on the father-son relationship to be expanded as Tony and Bart share, with great wisdom, the lessons they have learned.

Michele’s Kids Corner

We had an awesome week Surfin’ Through the Scriptures during Vacation Bible School. God blessed us with over 190 children to share His love and grace with. God blessed us with over 150 volunteers who helped in preparation for VBS and throughout the week. If you were there during VBS, you experienced God’s amazing power and the excitement as children, youth, and adults shared the love of God. We have truly been blessed as the body of Christ here at Tuckston to be a part of this ministry. I want to thank our directors: Jennifer Abbott, Mary Sledge, and Kim Howard for doing an outstanding job of directing our VBS. Thanks to all of you who graciously gave of your time in preparing for VBS and in serving in a multitude of ways during VBS.

During VBS, our children lived out what it means to be obedient and kind as they generously brought supplies to help individuals in need. The following items were collected:
School Supplies for Athens’ Kids:  15,300 Sheets of Notebook Pads, 1,502 Pencils, 40 Pencil Boxes, 72 Rulers, 125 Spiral-bound Notebooks, 143 Folders, 134 Glue Sticks

Supplies for the Brazil Mission Team:  1,187 Colored Pencils

Supplies for the Athens Nurses Clinic:  62 Containers of Deodorant, 297 Socks

Prayer of the Week
Father, Holy are You, righteous in all Your ways.  We ask that as we seek Your face that we may become like You.  Forgive us as we fall short in doing what you call us to do for You.  We ask that You would renew a right spirit within us.  Let us serve You with joy, being obedient to the teachings of Your Word.  Keep us from the temptations of this world and help us to remain focused on You Lord, being the center of our life.  In Jesus Name.  Amen.
